Wed, 02 Dec 2009 02:13:30 -0800 Writing for the Web - Headlines and Teasers http://bonn2009.posterous.com/writing-for-the-web-headlines-and-teasers http://bonn2009.posterous.com/writing-for-the-web-headlines-and-teasers

Headline

  • Should be an ultra-short abstract of the article
  • Simple and straightforward (short sentence, subject-verb-object, active voice, not passive)
  • Must work out of context (search engine; article list; bookmark; e-mail newsletter)
  • Must make clear what the text is about: what will the user get for his click?
  • Should have key words that refer to news stories that are still on people’s minds
  • Should have key words that users would put in a search engine to find information about this topic
  • Must work without seeing surrounding data (e.g. pictures)
  • Must be written in plain language (no puns; no clever headlines)
  • rule of thumb: maximum of 40 – 60 character

    Teaser

    • Should be like a “slide” for the user into the article
    • The style depends on your users (serious news-style; tabloid style)
    • Make the first words count (important, carrying information; makes scanning easier)
    • Put details into the text – not the teaser
    • Maximum 300 characters

    News Teaser

contains the basic information; short, concise, no personal opinion

A German naval vessel helped avert another hijacking attempt by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden. Meanwhile, France and the US are drafting a United Nations resolution to put a stop to the piracy.

    Teaser with cliffhanger

deliberately leaves one of the six central questions unanswered (who, what, when, where, why, how) BUT: don’t use cliffhangers too often – the idea gets boring for the user after a while.

Three people were hurt in a car accident on Monday. But one person involved seems to have had a guardian angel.

A new parental leave scheme has been hugely popular among fathers as well as mothers, Germany's family affairs minister said. But the success comes with a price tag.

    Tue, 24 Nov 2009 02:32:50 -0800 Podcasting http://bonn2009.posterous.com/podcasting-116 http://bonn2009.posterous.com/podcasting-116 Podcasting Steps:

    1. Think of what you want to say
    2. Record something
    3. Edit it in Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net)

If the sound levels are differing, please do the following:
    4. (optional) Export the file as a WAV
    5. (optional) Open the program „Levelator“ (http://www.conversationsnetwork.org/levelator/) and drag the WAV file there
    6. (optional) Open the new file „YOURFILENAME.output.WAV“ in Audacity, then go on with 7)

    7. Export the file as a MP3 (and fill in the information in the little window!!! Title = title of your episode or „headline“, Artist = your name, Album = name of your podcast, for example „Made in Germany“, Genre = pick something other than Blues, maybe „other“ or „spoken word“)

Now your file is ready to be published on the internet. There are different possibilities to do that:

    - You could use a hosting company like www.libsyn.com ($5 a month for the smallest package), where you have your own subdomain with a blog, RSS-feeds are generated automatically)
    - If you have an existing blog and want to publish your episodes there, just upload them to your blog and open an account at www.feedburner.com to create your podcasting-feed
    - if you are using Wordpress for your blog, then you should download and install the plugin „Podpress“ (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/podpress/) to generate the little flashplayer and a feed. You can also use www.feedburner.com to generate your feed after you installed the plugin (this is what we did in the seminar, that's why I will show you the steps for this method:)

Publishing new episodes to your Wordpress-blog:

Open Wordpress and log in at:
http://training.dw-world.de/ausbildung/blogs/bonn2009/wp-login.php Click on „Media“ in the left column and after that on „Add new“. Upload your MP3-file. At the end of the uploading-process there will be a line at the bottom of your screen saying something like „File URL“. Please copy this URL.

Next you have to click on „Posts“ and „Add new“. You are then asked to enter a headline for your posting and some text describing the new episode. After you entered this information, scroll down to the end of the page where there is a section on Podcasting (if you have installed the PodPress-plugin). Click on „Add new media“ and insert the Location you copied before.
Below that, there is a prompt you copy, it says (define location). Copy it with the brackets, please, and insert it in the text of your blog-posting, where you want the audio-player to appear later on. After all of this, you click on „Publish“ in the right column, if you want the episode to be published right away. If you want to publish it at a later date, you can enter the date and time right there in the Publishing-box.

    Done!

    Sat, 21 Nov 2009 05:13:00 -0800 Introducing Soundslides http://bonn2009.posterous.com/introducing-soundslides http://bonn2009.posterous.com/introducing-soundslides

We already used Slide and Photopeach. As you have seen - these service are pretty simple and easy to use. All you need is a bunch of pictures and a stable internet-connection. But there are quite a lot of limitations. We talked about these as well. The biggest one: You can not work on the transitions. We are going to change that now. With yet again another tool. It is called Soundslides.

Soundslides is a slide show authoring program that was created by former photojournalist Joe Weiss in 2005. The application took the journalism industry by storm and quickly rose to become an industry standard for audio slide show authoring. Soundslides is a desktop application, which means you have to download it on to your computer. It's available for both Mac and PC and comes in two versions: a basic version which runs $39.95 and a pro version that costs $69.95. The trial and full versions of SoundSlides can be purchased and downloaded for free at Soundslides.

Some of the benefits of Soundslides include:

    • An incredibly simple-to-use interface
    • Very small learning curve, most of it is drag-and-drop
    • Outputs files in Adobe Flash format, a very common Web format that works cross platform
    • It was built for journalists

Some of the drawbacks of Soundslides :

    • No video integration
    • Runs a dynamic slide show from a folder of files, so it only works on the Web

Storys can be told with pictures, music, background noises, a narrator or interviewees talking. Think carefully about your concept of Storytelling! An read this article about it.

    Tue, 17 Nov 2009 07:08:00 -0800 From 1.0 to 2.0 and further.... http://bonn2009.posterous.com/from-10-to-20-and-further http://bonn2009.posterous.com/from-10-to-20-and-further

Web 2.0 websites allow users to do more than just retrieve information: information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design and collaboration on the World Wide Web. Examples of Web 2.0 include web-based communities, hosted services, web applications, social-networking sites, video-sharing sites, wikis, blogs, mashups and folksonomies.

    Media_httpwwwsizlopediacomwpcontentuploadsweb10vsweb20png_jlqvfuquiybgwod

O'Reilly's Web 2.0 conferences have been held every year since 2004, attracting entrepreneurs, large companies, and technology reporters. In terms of the lay public, the term Web 2.0 was largely championed by bloggers and by technology journalists, culminating in the 2006 TIME magazine Person of The Year - "You." That is, TIME selected the masses of users who were participating in content creation on social networks, blogs, wikis, and media sharing sites.

Web 1.0 was about reading. Web 2.0 is about writing.

Web 1.0 was about companies. Web 2.0 is about communities.

Web 1.0 was about lectures. Web 2.0 is about conversation.

    Web 1.0 was top-down.  Web 2.0 is bottom-up.

Web 1.0 was edited and produced.  Web 2.0 is raw.

Web 1.0 was text.  Web 2.0 is video.

Web 1.0 was professional. Web 2.0 is amature.

    Media_httpkabrenlevinsoncomblogimagesweb20servicesjpg_qshgaviedfadfps

There are quite a lot of so called Web 2.0-services. You do not need to know them all ;-)

The Dutch ICT think tank EPN (recently merged with ECP.nl to ECP-EPN) has produced this short movie, clearifying one of the Web 3.0 concepts.
